Over the last six months, most commentators have finally stopped saying that the relationship between Russia and the United States is “at its worst since the end of the Cold War” and begun recognizing the obvious: a new Cold War is unfolding.
A refusal to correct structural distortions in the Russian economy, including by developing green industries, may cause the country to fall far behind the main global economic trends for a long time in much the same way the Soviet Union fell behind in cybernetics in the 1970-1980s.
Whereas before the pandemic I said the situation was more or less predictable and medium-term trends were more or less visible, now I can only tell you that I can tell you nothing.
The crisis will by all means exacerbate dramatically the growing inequality and the sense of injustice ingrained in the modern capitalism, and further reduce the already shrunk middle class in developed countries. Most will become poorer, but especially in poorer countries.
We do not have a positive ideology for ourselves, no new Russian idea. But without such ideas all great powers collapse or cease to be great. The world is strewn with their graves and ruins.
The only bright spot in this forecast is the possible partial removal of parasitic warts from the body of modern societies and economies―deflation of financial and informational bubbles that increasingly often served as a substitute for the real economy and life.

The system of economic, political, and cultural dominance of the West reached its peak in the 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed. But in the mid-2000s, a stunningly fast decline began.

The resistance from domestic elites. There are different reasons for it. Some are not prepared to accept the obvious that the “Westernizer” today is a thing of the past and that those looking forward, into the future, must show interest in the East.
