The crucial mistake is the lack of public and government attention to man as the principal subject and object of development.
For more than five years, we, together with some colleagues from the Russian expert community, have been actively advocating a turn of the Russian economy towards the Pacific.
Resume The main reserves for Russia’s foreign policy and its influence in the next decade lie more than ever in internal development. And this is also where the main threats are, fraught with the risk of losing political weight in the international arena and the status of great power.
I am sure that Brussels’ interest is purely political and psychological. The EU’s international influence has been damaged by the crisis and the mistakes of the 1990s, when Brussels set the unrealistic goal of creating a common foreign and defense policy. All this was to undermine the impact of great powers, while preventing the EU from expanding its international clout.
The now-on-now-off relations between Russia and the United States in recent years have resulted the termination of their “reset” policy with President Obama’s decision to cancel the planned face-to-face summit with President Putin, which was to be held during a G20 meeting in Russia.
During a discussion held last year at the 20 th Assembly of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, some Russian participants emphasized the need for its members to start a work to define Russia’s identity. Many council members, who rightly consider themselves an enlightened part of the Russian elite, thought this was a corny idea.
The Eurasian Promise China’s Westward Turn to Benefit Russia The latest meetings of the CIS heads of state and the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, held in Astana on October 16-17, irradiated plans to link the Eurasian Economic Union with the Silk Road Economic Belt and with efforts to develop cooperation in Central Asia, including in the military-political field.
MOSCOW – More than 18 months after former President Viktor Yanukovych was driven from power (and into exile), the crisis in Ukraine is at a stalemate. Crimea has been reabsorbed by Russia (in what many consider an annexation); much of eastern Ukraine is held by pro-Russia rebels; and relations between the West and Russia are more tense than at any time.
The current crisis in Russia-West relations is commonly blamed on Russia’s actions in Crimea, Donbass and Ukraine in general. But its roots go much deeper. And it may have much more serious consequences in the long term. The situation may not only evolve into a full-blown armed clash, the probability of which I hope is declining, political confrontation or truncated economic ties.
